About this indicator

What it measures

The percentage of residents living in areas classified as urban by each national statistical office.

How to interpret it

Use it to examine the urban share of population over time, separately from city size or population density.

Important limitation

Urban definitions and boundaries differ across countries, limiting direct comparisons. Estimates may also be smoothed.

Year-on-year change compares consecutive observed years only. Percentage-based indicators show percentage-point differences; other indicators show percentage change. Missing values remain missing.
