About this indicator

What it measures

Expected years of life at birth if the reference year's mortality rates persisted throughout life.

How to interpret it

Higher values reflect lower mortality across ages; deaths early in life have a particularly large effect.

Important limitation

This is a population measure, not a personal lifespan forecast or the average age at death.

Year-on-year change compares consecutive observed years only. Percentage-based indicators show percentage-point differences; other indicators show percentage change. Missing values remain missing.
