About this indicator

What it measures

Residents aged 65 or older as a percentage of the total population, based on midyear estimates.

How to interpret it

It describes population age structure. A higher share does not necessarily mean a larger number of older residents.

Important limitation

Annual age estimates can rely on interpolation and may not fully reflect short-term demographic changes.

Year-on-year change compares consecutive observed years only. Percentage-based indicators show percentage-point differences; other indicators show percentage change. Missing values remain missing.
