About this indicator

What it measures

Children a woman would have over her reproductive life if the reference year's age-specific fertility rates continued.

How to interpret it

Use it to compare childbearing levels in a given year, separately from the total number of births or population size.

Important limitation

It is not the actual lifetime births of women alive today. Some values are estimated from censuses or surveys.

Year-on-year change compares consecutive observed years only. Percentage-based indicators show percentage-point differences; other indicators show percentage change. Missing values remain missing.
