About this indicator

What it measures

Exports plus imports of goods and services, expressed as a percentage of GDP.

How to interpret it

It shows the scale of trade relative to the economy, rather than the trade balance or a surplus.

Important limitation

Trade can exceed 100% of GDP because gross cross-border flows and domestic value added measure different things.

Year-on-year change compares consecutive observed years only. Percentage-based indicators show percentage-point differences; other indicators show percentage change. Missing values remain missing.
